Workshop 1: Optimizing mobile technology for the busy professional Offered by the LIASA CiCD

Our lives have become a rush from one activity to the next meeting and still trying to balance family and home, social activities and professional life. We have all the tools – smart phones and tablets. But how savvy are you with your mobile technology? Can you merely navigate your way around the basics and well known features or do you maximise the use of your Smartphone or tablet? This workshop will show you how technology can assist in streamlining your life.

Workshop 2: Competitive Intelligence Offered by the LIASA CiCD

With progress it is perceived as if the library will be replaced by technology. But by gaining knowledge about the “competition” you can build a strategy to let technology and other perceived threats to the library’s existence work for you. In this workshop Dave Hendrie will show us how to gain the competitive edge and then how to use the competitive intelligence to our advantage for the benefit of our profession.

Workshop 3: Is the customer still king? Customer service for the library practitioner Offered by the LIASA CiCD

We might call them patrons or borrowers or students, but they are still our customers who need a quality service. Is the customer still always right? And what about that difficult customer – how do I make sure that he left the library satisfied with the service. In this workshop we will look at:
      • What is customer service and why is it important
      • Being in the frontline for excellent service
      • How to effectively communicate with the patrons and how to deal with complaints

Workshop 4: Coaching and mentoring as a personal and professional development tool Offered by the Centre for African Library Leadership

If you ask most successful business leaders, they will tell you that they had definite mentors who assisted them in their journey. They will further emphasize the fact that it is most probably the strongest development input they had in their leadership career. Mentorship is a key leadership function. During this highly participative and dynamic presentation, the following will receive attention:
     • Coaching and Mentoring: What it is and what it is not?
     • How to embrace your role as a Mentor / Coach
     • Great Mentors in history
     • The role of the Mentor
     • The role of the Mentee
     • Key mentorship skills
     • A mentorship strategy: Balancing the leadership task

Workshop 5: Librarianship as a scarce skill Offered by RETIG

In this workshop, facilitated by RETIG, the aim is to take a look at the Library profession as a whole. There will be a panel discussion and presentations relating to librarianship as a scarce skill. Panelists and presenters will include speakers from government, the academic sector as well as practitioners and it is essential that academics and practitioners be part of this very important discussion. A look will be taken at the problem within the framework of the national development plan as propounded by the NPC and the variances between library qualifications will be addressed.
