The Library Association of South Africa and its Committee on Freedom of Access and Freedom of Expression (FAIFE) stand for freedom of expression, transparency and accountability in the exchange of information and in the media. We advocate and support the provision of efficient, user-oriented and excellent library and information services that aspire to equitable access to information for all communities (literate and illiterate) in South Africa. To this end, we represent the interests of and promote the development and image of library and information workers and agencies. We respect the rights of our users, including writers and journalists, and support responsible journalism and the sharing of knowledge for the good of society.

The Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) wants to raise grave concern about libraries being targeted and burned down in protests against Non-delivery of services. The burning of the Library in Balfour, Mpumalanga on Tuesday was shocking. So far four libraries were burned down in protests in Mpumalanga Province, namely Sakhile Library in Standerton, Thandukukhanya Library in Piet Retief, Siyathuthuka Library in Belfast and Mashishing Library in former Lydenburg in 2009. The fifth one to go up in flames is Siyathemba in Balfour.
While LIASA recognises the right of communities to protest and demonstrate, we strongly condemn the senseless targeting and destruction of libraries. A Library is the heart of a community, a beacon of hope, a symbol of upliftment and empowerment in any community. As partners in education and social development, libraries play a vital role in eradicating illiteracy, inculcating a mindset of lifelong learning and instilling a culture of reading which sparks critical thinking and debate needed in any democracy. To burn down libraries is to blow out the light that could lead many communities out of the tunnel of ignorance. It is clear that the five libraries which went up in flames took with them opportunities to develop into a reading or informed community.

Raising R1 million for LIASA. The President's challenge.
The LIASA President’s challenge to all LIASA members...
In this present economic climate we need to look at ways to become self sustaining.
Presently we generate funds from membership, grants and some very loyal sponsors.
However the annual membership fees, currently R 350.00 for the individual full member, mainly goes towards the operational costs. Membership fees alone will not sustain our Association into the future! We have to look at additional ways to generate funds hence the challenge from our President Rachel More to raise R1 Million for LIASA during her term of office.
The President kicked off this campaign with a donation of R1000, so it is up to the members to add the zero’s we need to reach the target of a million.

LIASA has achieved many successes over the last decade, but also faced some challenges. These include a declining membership, members' apathy, lack of growth in Branches and Interest Groups, financial problems and lack of capacity in the LIASA National Office.
To address these challenges the President and Representative Council adopted a theme for their term of office, namely: "Repositioning LIASA for growth and development".
